What Is IASTM?

IASTM or Instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization is a technique used in physical therapy and recovery. Physical therapist use various tools in replace of their hands to provide manual to the desired tissue. Depending on the tool at hand can provide different tissue responses and healing effects.

Tissues that can be impacted by these tools are muscles, fascia, ligaments, and tendons. The different tools, angles and pressures utilized by the therapist will determine which tissue is targeted. These techniques can help promote healing, improve mobility, and help with athletic performance.

The purpose of manual is to help promote mobility and reduce pain to allow for targeted strengthening exercises. This is just one of many ways a physical therapist can get a reaction from the tissue and body to help progress the rehab process.
